Canadian baritone Drew Santini, a native of Stratford, Ontario, is garnering recognition for his “lively and engaging work” (New York Times) and “his pure baritone and natural musicality” (London Free Press). His opera credits include Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Figaro (Le Nozze di Figaro), Le Gendarme (Les Mamelles de Tirésias), Lockit (Beggar’s Opera), Ramiro (L’heure Espagnole), and Mr. Splinters (The Tender Land), with such conductors as James Levine, David Effron, Anne Manson, Dan Saunders, and Valery Ryvkin. 

In demand as an interpreter of new music, Mr. Santini has workshopped and has given world premieres in both opera and art song. He performed in the New York City workshops and reading of Stephen Schwartz’s first opera Séance on a Wet Afternoon under the direction of Mr. Schwartz himself. With American Opera Projects in New York, Mr. Santini has performed the music of Stephen Schwartz, Gregory Spears, Daniel Felsenfeld, and Jennifer Griffith, working directly with the composers. Recently he collaborated with Grammy winning trumpeter, composer and arranger, Terence Blanchard, to develop a new jazz opera for the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. With composer Gregory Spears and choreographer/librettist Christopher Williams, Mr. Santini created the role of Gilfaethwy the False in Wolf-in-Skins, an evening length dance-opera in progress with American Opera Projects and Philadelphia Dance Projects. 

Mr. Santini’s concerts include Graun’s Der Tod Jesu with the Finnish Baroque Orchestra, Bach Cantatas at Tage Alter Musik in Regensburg with La Bande Montréal Baroque, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with Holland Baroque Society, St. John Passion with the Elora Festival Singers, and Christmas Oratorio with Concerto Barocco, Mozart’s Coronation Mass with Parnassus Ensemble, Fauré’s Requiem with the Champlain Valley Oratorio Society, Handel’s Messiah with the International Symphony Orchestra, Brahm’s Requiem with Central City Chorus, and Mendelssohn’s Elijah at St. James’ Episcopal Church in New York City. 

Mr. Santini recently became the first singer in over a decade to receive the Grand Award at the National Music Festival in Canada, competing against first place winners in each instrumental category. He also won the Prix Jeune Espoire at Le Concours International de Chant Lyrique de Vivonne in France. Mr. Santini was chosen to participate in The Song Continues at Carnegie Hall and worked with legendary American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne. He has participated in masterclasses with Thomas Hampson, Roberta Alexander, Benita Valente, Roger Vignoles, Malcolm Martineau, and Martin Katz. 

On the ATMA label, Mr. Santini recorded Bach Cantatas 4, 9, 106, and 181 with La Bande Montréal Baroque. 

Mr. Santini holds music degrees from The Juilliard School and the Manhattan School of Music. He currently resides in the Netherlands.
