• August 23, 2012:  Meet the Mavs (Showed Solaris and Helios to all the attendees – received a rousing round of applause – great for the teams morale.)

 

• September  23, 2012:  San Antonio Plug-In Day, Crossroads Mall, •TASA/TASB Convention, Austin Convention Center, September 28, 2012 (At this conference the MadSCI students spoke about our program to a large group of school administrators and school board members from across Texas.)

 

• October 6, 2012:  Solar Fest, Lincoln Park, (Took our car Helios to show to the general public. Received many very positive comments about the car and our program.)

 

• October 6, 2012:  Ag Fair, James Madison HS

 

• October 7, 2012:  Shell Eco-Marathon Promotion, Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, (The students of MadSCI were invited by the sponsors of the Shell Eco-Marathon to discuss the event and their new alternative fuel vehicle. Quite an honor and a great learning experience for the students as they got a chance to learn about many other means of propulsion and many different designs and construction methods.)

 

• October 10, 2012:  Water Forum, Pearl Brewery, (Showed our car Helios to numerous members of the San Antonio Clean Technology Coalition including Mayor Castro who had driven our previous car Solaris.)

 

• October 27, 2012:  UTSA Tail-Gating Event, Alamodome, (Showcased our car Helios and discussed our program with thousands of UTSA fans and alumni)

 

• December 4, 2012:  Meeting with OCI Solar, (Showed our cars and detailed our program for several executives from OCI Solar.)

 

• February 9, 2013:  Build IT 2013! Witte Museum, (Exhibited Solaris and Helios at the Witte Museum. Spoke to numerous parents and students about our cars and alternative energy particularly solar energy.  Hundreds of students sat in our cars.)

 

• February 23, 2013:  Green Energy & Engineering Fair, St. Philip’s College, (Showcased our car Helios for a large group of Middle school, High School, and College students in addition to the general public that were attending)

 

• April 4 – 7, 2013:  Shell Eco-Marathon, Houston, TX , (Successfully raced our fourth alternative energy car Volta. Volta is a battery-electric vehicle. The competition is based on vehicle efficiency and even with our limited budget we placed 22 out of the 45 teams in our category.  The vast majority of those teams were university teams. Very satisfying for our first competition in this category and with our limited resources and budget.)

 

• April 11 – 14, 2013:  NSTA Conference, Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, (Showcased our program to the numerous science teachers, technology company representatives, students, and members of the general public attending this national conference.  Also provided numerous learning opportunities for us.)

 

• April 23 – 26, 2013:  Night In Old San Antonio, La Villita, (Our main fund-raising event for the year and a lot of fun. Allows our team members to perform a community service, learn the value of hard-work, and appreciate the amount of work that goes into earning funds for our program.  Thank you San Antonio Conservation Society for this opportunity.)

 

• June 24 – 29, 2013:  Formula One Sun Grand Prix, Circuit of the Americas, Austin, TX, (Incredible learning experience as our team members got to see solar cars built by numerous university teams and discuss facets of their design and construction.  We also served as a volunteer work force for the event.)

2011-2012

 

 

• July 25 – 29, 2011:  Solar Car Challenge, Texas Motor Speedway,  (Attended with the entire MadSCI team to learn about the event and gather knowledge to help us enter and race the next year).

 

• August 19, 2011:  Meet the Mavs   (First actual showing of our first solar car Solaris.)

 

• August 23, 2011:  UTSA Solar Fair, UTSA Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute, (First showing of Solaris outside the Madison High School community.)

 

• September 15, 2011:  Toyota Showcase, Toyota Motors of Texas, (Took Solaris out to Toyota Motors of Texas so that the employees and executives could see what their grant money helped to build. Answered many questions and drove the car around the parking lot.)

 

• October 1, 2011:  Solar San Antonio Solar Homes Tour, (Drove Solaris around the neighborhood to the delight of many interested spectators.)

 

• October 8, 2011:  Harris Middle School Green Energy Fest, Harris Middle School, (Allowed Harris Middle School students that were part of the Madison feed-in schools to see our car and gain early recruits.)

 

• October 19, 2011:  National Electrification Transportation Conference, Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center, (Wow, what an event!  The number of people that saw our car Solaris, talked with the students on the team about the car and solar energy was unbelievable.  It seemed like we were the hit of the show.)

 

• October 20 – 23, 2011:  International Auto Show, Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center,(Continuation of the National Electrification Transportation Conference)

 

• November 5 – 6, 2011:  Austin Science & Engineering Festival, Austin Convention Center, (Literally thousands of students and adults saw our car Solaris, sat in it, and discussed the cars and solar energy with us)

 

• November 18, 2011:  UTSA Solar Array Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, UTSA, (Mayor Julian Castro took our car Solaris for a spin around the quad – Wow what an honor to meet him!  It was very special for all the students of MadSCI to have him take interest in their work and to see him drive the car on which they worked so hard.)

 

• February 25, 2012:  St Philip’s College Green Energy Expo, St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus, (Showed and drove Solaris for a large group of Middle school, High School, and College students in addition to the general public that were attending.)

 

• March 29 – April 1, 2012:   Shell Eco-Marathon, Houston, TX, (Entered and raced our second solar car Nova.  We were one of only 4 solar car teams out of 18 that had successful runs on the track.  Our team was awarded the Perseverance Award for all that we had to go through to build our car, get it there, pass scrutineering, and then finish with successful runs. We designed and built the car in my garage - since other facilities were not available - in two weeks. Our team and car was featured in the Houston Chronicle as an example of what can be done even with a very low budget. How necessity can often stimulate innovation.

 

• April 24 – 27, 2012:  Night In Old San Antonio, La Villita, (Much needed fund-raising opportunity for our team.  The money allowed us to finish our third solar car Helios and enter it into the Solar Car Challenge)

 

• July 14-19, 2012:  Solar Car Challenge, Texas Motor Speedway, Fort Worth, TX, (Finished in 8th place with Helios, our first time racing – gained invaluable experience.)

• July 11, 2013 :  Air Quality Forum – RackSpace – (First public showing in San Antonio of our fourth alternative energy car, Volta. Volta is a battery-electric vehicle that was raced in the 2013 Shell Eco-Marathon in Houston, TX. The competition is based on vehicle efficiency and even with our limited budget we placed 22 out of the 45 teams in our category. The vast majority of those teams were university teams. Very satisfying for our first competition in this category and with our limited resources and budget.)

 

• August 26, 2013:  Meet the Mavs, Madison High School, (Showcased all three of our operating cars – Solaris, Helios, and for the first time Volta to the Madison community.)

 

• September 28, 2013 :  Fundraiser at Sonic Drive-In on TPC Parkway (Much needed opportunity to raise funds toward updating Helios for the Solar Car Challenge and building a new car for the Shell Eco-Marathon. Thank you again to the wonderful crew at the Sonic Drive-in on TPC Parkway.)

 

• October 5, 2013 :  Madison High School Ag Fair, (Showcased our cars Solaris and Volta and set up a booth with solar cells to carry out the electrolysis of water. We then used the hydrogen to power miniature fuel-cell cars. This was a great way to involve the young students and even the adults and show them what solar energy can do. It was also a great teaching opportunity for our team members.)

 

• October 19, 2013:  San Antonio Solar Fest, Maverick Park (Showcased and drove our cars Solaris and Volta at the event. Hundreds of people talked with us about our cars and program. Many kids sat in the cars and had their pictures taken.)

 

• October 26, 2013:  Awesome San Antonio Foundation Anniversary Celebration – Alamo Eats – (Great opportunity to show our appreciation to the group that awarded us a grant. They got the chance to specifically see what we were able to do with the grant money they awarded us. We also got the chance to again showcase and discuss our cars and program with many people.)
