The investment

There is an established price spectrum for professional book ghostwriting and my fees are within the typical range, at £1,200 (ex. VAT) per 10,000 words, plus agreed expenses such as unavoidable accommodation or long-distance travel.

A typical 'business' book ranges from about 60,000 to 120,000 words (giving a ballpark price range of £7,200 to £14,400).

Fees can be staged with a 50% retainer on commencement and the balance paid in up to three stages. Final manuscript is delivered on receipt of the last instalment.

The other key investment is some of your time. Four to six half-days of interview typically.

The legalities

Legally, the originator of a written work holds the copyright. This isn't normally an issue because the material I write for your book is highly unlikely to have any purpose elsewhere. However, I am happy to make a written agreement signing the copyright over to you if required.

In most cases clients have other reasons to have a book written than for commercial publishing, and the desired output will vary accordingly. 

Most straightforwardly you will have a finished manuscript which you can submit to publishers or agents if you wish. Alternatively I can prepare this manuscript for you to self-publish, and I can carry out that process for you at additional cost (including arranging design and print).

In some cases you may wish to have a professional proposal prepared, before committing to a complete book, which you (or I) can submit to an agent or a publisher. Typically a proposal (which will include two or three sample chapters and an explanation of how your book fits in the marketplace), will cost around £3,000 (ex. VAT).
