Atticus Finch

Hello, nice to meet you. I’m Atticus Finch, father of Jean Louise (Scout) and Jeremy (Jem), sister to their Aunt Alexandra.  I like to teach my kids right from wrong, and especially had to during Tom Robinson’s trial. I am an attorney for Maycomb County, and usually defend colored people accused of things they didn’t do, like Tom. I once had the nickname “One Shot Finch” because of my skill as a sharpshooter.  I gave up the hobby though, because I had an unfair advantage over other living things. I vowed that I wouldn’t shoot again unless I had to, like when I had to kill a rabid dog, Tim Johnson, in the street one afternoon.  I’m not the kind of person to do things inside the house that I wouldn’t do in public.  In To Kill a Mockingbird, I am the base of morality and justice, and try to convey this all of the time, especially in front of my children.

Quotes:

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

"Courage is not a man with a gun in his hand. It's knowing you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do."

Dr. Reynolds is the Maycomb doctor. "Had brought Jem and me into the world, had led us through every childhood disease known to man including the time Jem fell out of the tree house, and he had never lost our friendship. Dr. Reynolds said that if we were boil-prone things would have been different...” He is well known to Jem and Scout. He has a strong bond with the Finches.
