Mr. Cunningham

I am Mr. Walter Cunningham Sr, father of Walter Cunningham Jr, who goes to school with Scout. I pay off debts not with money, but with goods (driftwood, nuts, etc.), like I did to the Finch family once. I was part of a gang one night before Tom Robinson’s trial, that tried to lynch him. I had joined, but when we got to the jailhouse, Atticus was there. He sat in front, waiting for us. His kids then came along to defend him, and Scout was so innocently trying to keep her father from any harm, I decided to get the men to back off and leave the site. Scout tried to defend by boy in school one day, when he wouldn’t take any lunch money from the teacher because he’s just like me. He doesn’t like to take things from people that he knows he can’t pay back in return. Yes, she did beat him up once or twice, but I know it was only because she got punished for sticking up for him. A relative of mine was the only one willing to acquit Tom Robinson in the court case.  Eventually, though, everyone wore him down and he just found it easier to claim he was guilty.  It was evident that he couldn't convince anyone else.

”The Cunninghams are country folks, farmers, and the crash hit them the hardest.”

“’Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man’ he said, ‘he just has blind spots along with the rest of us.’”

Dr. Reynolds is the Maycomb doctor. "Had brought Jem and me into the world, had led us through every childhood disease known to man including the time Jem fell out of the tree house, and he had never lost our friendship. Dr. Reynolds said that if we were boil-prone things would have been different...” He is well known to Jem and Scout. He has a strong bond with the Finches.
