Tom Robinson

Tom Robinson is the black man that Atticus is defending at the trial. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, Bob Ewell's eldest daughter. Atticus almost proves that Tom Robinson couldn't have done any harm to Mayella, because his left arm was "almost nothing", and the injuries were mostly on Mayella's right side, meaning a left-handed person was most likely to have given Mayella the bruises. Atticus has Bob Ewell write his name, and he is left- handed. Tom Robinson said that Mayella asked him to come inside and help her with the door. When Tom noticed nothing was wrong, she jumped on him and kissed him. Then, he and Mayella saw Bob Ewell in the window, and Tom ran. From this information, Atticus pieced together that Mayella was beaten by her father when he saw her kiss a black man. Even after Atticus does all he can, Tom is said to be guilty. Atticus tries to bring hope to Tom Robinson by saying that there is still a chance that he can be given another trial. If Tom isn't said to be innocent, he will be sentenced to death. Meanwhile, Tom was sent to prison until the new process could begin, where his family couldn't visit him. During exercise hour, Tom tried to escape over the wall, but was shot by the guards 17 times (even though 1 time would have done the job). Atticus says if he had two good arms, he would've escaped. Tom Robinson is one of the mockingbirds in the story because he was ultimately helping Mayella Ewell with chores when she asked him, then he took the blame for Bob Ewell, and was killed.
