Cecil Jacobs

Cecil Jacobs is a bully in Scout’s grade.  Early in the book he calls Atticus a “Negro-lover,” and Scout would have beat him up, if Atticus hadn’t specifically told her not to.  He does not play a large role in the story until the end of the book.  During current events period he shares about Adolf Hitler, arousing Scout’s curiosity about him.  While Jem and Scout are walking to the auditorium for the pageant, Cecil jumps out in the dark and scares them.  Cecil and Scout go off together while Jem finds friends his own age.  They each have 30 cents to spend at the various booths that are part of the festival.  Later, the two both have roles in the pageant.  Scout is a ham, while Cecil is a cow.  When Scout and Jem are walking home, they hear someone following behind them.  They suspect that it’s Cecil trying to scare them again, so Scout yells “Cecil Jacobs is a big wet hen!”  It turns out that Bob Ewell was the one following them and trying to kill them to get revenge on Atticus.
