Mr. Dolphus Raymond

Dolphus Raymond is a wealthy white man who prefers to live among black folks, rather than white folks, because of white folks' hypocrisy. He has children with a black woman, which Jem call “mixed chillun.” Dolphus Raymond pretends he is an alcoholic so that the people of Maycomb will have an excuse for his behavior, but in reality he only drinks Coca-Cola out of a paper bag. He shows Scout how sometimes you need to pretend you are something, even if you really are not.

Quote about Dolphus Raymond:

"Because you’re children and you can understand it,’ he said, ‘and because I heard that one -’ He jerked his head at Dill: ‘Things haven’t caught up with that one’s instinct yet. Let him get a little older and he won’t get sick and cry. Maybe things will strike him as being – not quite right, say, but he won’t cry, not when he gets a few years on him.’
‘Cry about what, Mr. Raymond?’ Dill’s maleness was beginning to assert itself. ’Cry about the simple hell people give other people – without even thinking."

Dr. Reynolds is the Maycomb doctor. "Had brought Jem and me into the world, had led us through every childhood disease known to man including the time Jem fell out of the tree house, and he had never lost our friendship. Dr. Reynolds said that if we were boil-prone things would have been different...” He is well known to Jem and Scout. He has a strong bond with the Finches.
