Mr. Underwood

Mr. Braxton Bragg Underwood is a news reporter and a friend of Atticus. He owns and also publishes The Maycomb Tribune. Being racist, he disagrees with Atticus for defending Tom Robinson but still respects him, shown when he defends Atticus from Walter Cunningham and the mob in front of the jail by having his shotgun loaded.

[Scout]: "...I turned to Atticus, but Atticus had gone to the jail and was leaning against it with his face to the wall. I went to him and pulled his sleeve. 'Can we go home now?' He nodded, produced his handkerchief, gave his face a going-over and blew his nose violently." [Tom Robinson] "Mr. Finch?" [Scout] "A soft husky voice came from the darkness above." [Tom Robinson] "They gone?" [Scout] "Atticus stepped back and looked up." [Atticus] "'They gone,' he said. 'Get some sleep, Tom. They won't bother you any more.'" [Scout] "From a different direction, another voice cut crisply through the night." [Mr Underwood] "You're damn tootin' they won't. Had you covered all the time, Atticus." [Scout] "Mr. Underwood and a double-barreled shotgun were leaning out his window above 'The Maycomb Tribune' office."

Dr. Reynolds is the Maycomb doctor. "Had brought Jem and me into the world, had led us through every childhood disease known to man including the time Jem fell out of the tree house, and he had never lost our friendship. Dr. Reynolds said that if we were boil-prone things would have been different...” He is well known to Jem and Scout. He has a strong bond with the Finches.
