Miss Caroline

Miss Caroline was Scout’s first-grade teacher.  She was a young, pretty teacher from Winston County, Alabama.  The first day of school she and Scout start off on the wrong foot.  The conflict begins when Scout reveals she is a few grade levels ahead because she already knows how to read.  Miss Caroline instructs her never to read at home again because she has to start over and learn it the “proper” way.  Then, when Walter Cunningham is without a lunch, Scout tries to explain to Miss Caroline why he can’t take money for a lunch.  Miss Caroline punished her by patting her with a ruler.  The next day, Miss Caroline becomes very upset when Burris Ewell leaves the school yelling mean names at her.  Atticus provides Scout with a suggestion for dealing with Miss Caroline, saying “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.”
